Siemens shows U10 UMTS phone
Nov, 01 2002 - 18:54
contributed by: hx

The U10, based on a hardware reference design from Motorola, is Siemens' first UMTS color-screen mobile phone operating both in WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) networks and in GSM/GPRS 900/1800 and 1900 MHz frequency bands. Siemens Mobile will distribute U10 3G handsets, a first result of its technical collaboration with Motorola, to selected operators to help build up UMTS networks and services.

In becoming one of the first manufacturers to offer 3G handsets to UMTS carriers, the Germany-headquartered company has also created a dedicated 3G service and customer support team to assist their customers to drive next generation telecomms development.

Feature-wise, the U10 sports an integrated camera which rotates 180 degrees and captures video with sound and still images, and supports sending these either via MMS or e-mail. Data transfer speeds up to 384 Kbps provide more than double the speed of current GPRS solutions in theory - and slightly more under real life conditions due to the full potential of GPRS services not being exploited today - will let users surf WAP 2.0 websites and download J2ME applications at previously unmatched speeds, while it's also possible to connect peripheral devices such as laptop computers through Bluetooth, USB or infrared.

Also, the U10 supports video streaming with file formats such as MPEG4 and playing back music stored in MP3 and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) formats. 2 MB of internal memory is available, which can be expanded by means of MMC memory cards.

Stun gun disguised as a cell phone
Nov, 01 2002 - 18:43
contributed by: hx

The Taiwanese personal security firm, Motedo has developed a stun gun that is disguised as a cell phone that can deliver a 180,000 volt shock from the antenna. The handset also comes with a loud siren, claimed at up to 130 dB.

The "phone" is unable to make phone calls though.

Surprisingly the stun gun phone works on a normal domestic battery, and fortunately - considering the high voltage it puts out, has a large safety switch on the side.

Unlimited 1xRTT from Sprint
Nov, 01 2002 - 18:42
contributed by: hx

Since the introduction of packet-based networks based on GPRS and CDMA2000 1xRTT technologies, uptake among subscribers has been slow - and many point towards the lack of pricing structures similar to those applying to fixed line Internet connections as one of the primary reasons. As one of the first carriers in the world, Sprint PCS is now introducing unlimited data use for its PCS Vision as part of a new, nationwide price restructuring in the U.S. - and it won't cost more than $10 USD per month.

Sprint's new pricing structure aims to simplify matters for consumers and business customers alike, and has been in effect since Oct. 18, 2002. Mainly aimed at making it easier and more attractive for customers to start using the carrier's CDMA2000 1xRTT-based PCS Vision wireless data services, PCS Free & Clear Plans for voice and data will be offered for a limited time to both consumers and business customers at price points initially ranging from $30 USD to $150 USD and will require a one year PCS Advantage Agreement.

et Mobile Networks, a Seattle-based wireless Internet service provider, has launched the U.S.' first high-speed mobile Internet service in Duluth, Minnesota, dubbed Monet Broadband. Built and commercially depployed by Monet, the network is North America's first CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network, theoretically capable of data transfer speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps - more than 15 times faster than competing CDMA2000 1xRTT networks.

For a flat monthly rate, Monet Broadband now offers high-speed, mobile access to the complete Internet, enabling access to all kinds of services at speeds unmatched by any other cellular network in the U.S. 1xEV-DO networks are theoretically capable of transferring data at speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps, and so such networks have only been deployed in a few countries with Korea as one of the first.
