Samsung Creates RFID Reader Chip for Mobile Devices
Nov, 28 2007 - 15:41 contributed by: hx
Samsung has developed a new chip that can be put into mobile devices such as cell phones and used to pull information from RFID tags. The content can be nearly anything and be stored in nearly any sort of product. When users swipe their phones over the tagged object, information is downloaded to the phone and displayed. The RFID reader is small, measuring 6.5mm x 6.5mm and uses very little power. It will initially be available in separate, tethered readers before it is actually embedded into devices.
Almost a fifth of European households use a mobile as their only phone, reveals research. Lithuania heads the nations who have turned against landlines with 48% of households replacing a fixed phone with a mobile. Finland was second with 47%. The figures from Eurostat, the EC's in-house statistical office, show how mobile phones have become essential to everyday European life.
It reports there are now 95 mobile phones for every 100 Europeans. While the average across 25 EU member nations is 18% the figures reveal a divide between old and new Europe in commitment to fixed phones. Older members of the EU, such as the UK (13%) and Germany (11%), tended to have fewer mobile-only homes compared to newcomers such as the Czech Republic which has 42%.

Another CDMA/GSM Hybrid for Verizon Clears FCC
Nov, 27 2007 - 00:07 contributed by: hx
Document seen on the FCC site reveal details about the Motorola Z6c World Edition for Verizon Wireless. It includes dual-band 800/1900 CDMA/EV-DO radios as well as dual-band 900/1800 GSM radios for roaming in Europe and Asia. Compared to the Motorola Z6tv, the Z6c loses MediaFLO mobile tv compatibility, but holds onto the 2 Megapixel camera, microSD slot, stereo Bluetooth and QVGA display. The FCC documents do not indicate when the Z6c will go on sale or how much it will cost.
It's not me, it's you. T-Mobile has mailed a letter to approximately 600 customers, severing them from T-Mobile services because they have been "identified as having the majority of their calling usage occur while roaming outside of the T-Mobile network." See, that's what you get for having a wandering eye, one that "cheats" on your existing provider.
Dubbed the Extreme Roamer Reduction (ERR) Initiative, this new policy from T-Mobile targets customers who spend too much time chatting on other networks. More specifically, the criteria listed include:
- Customer is roaming outside of T-Mobile network 100% of the time
- Defined contractual term has expired on all active lines
- Non-Business and non-Government account types
- Non-VIP and non-Special account sub-types
The Nokia N82's been official for all of 24 hours, so obviously someone's already unboxed it -- and we've got to say, we're going start pronouncing "Symbian" like the dude in this video. Check it after the break -- and make sure you're ready to get down, because that soundtrack is hot :-D
